Orbitz Concerned About Stolen Mailing List

from the we-didn't-mean-to-spam-you... dept

Just as we were discussing the fact that no companies are disclosing security breaches to their customers (despite the new California law), along comes Orbitz to make a liar out of us. They’re saying that it appears that, somehow, their email list got into the hands of spammers. They’re not sure how it happened – saying that they’ve contacted the FBI and are doing an internal investigation. It sounds as though someone inside at the company probably took the list and sold it – which was one of the issues discussed in our recent article about white collar spam. Even if a company officially follows its privacy policy – there’s nothing to keep a disgruntled employee from taking your email and selling it to the nearest spammer.
