UK Advertisers Who Buy Email Lists Must Guarantee People Want Marketing Messages

from the opt-in dept

Interesting ruling in the UK by UK’s Advertising Standards Authority, saying that, even if a company buys an email list that they’ve been told is completely “opt-in” it is still the advertiser’s responsibility to guarantee that the recipients consented to receive the email. In other words, stop just buying lists from random organizations who claim they’re 100% opt-in. They’re not. Instead, only work directly with a company that has audited information showing that the addresses really opted-in, and understand what they opted-in for. Better yet, stop spamming altogether and figure out a better marketing strategy.
