Burglars With Wi-Fi Detectors?

Found over at Wi-Fi Networking News is a post from David Weingberger’s blog talking about some stolen laptops where the belief is that the criminals used WiFi detectors to figure out who had access points in their homes, and then went in and stole the laptops. Of course, it’s not explained how anyone knows WiFi detectors were used, so I’d want to see more proof. Besides, it would seem like this is a method that isn’t likely to give you much benefit over time. There will be increasing WiFi signals, and it doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a laptop present.
