Alaska Gets Satellite WiFi

More stories of satellite broadband and WiFi coming together. The details (unfortunately) aren’t entirely clear, but a tiny, isolated island in Alaska is set to get what is being described as satellite broadband WiFi hotspots. I’m assuming this means the backhaul is provided by satellite to a fixed antenna, which then transmits the connection locally using WiFi. The idea is to connect local businesses on the island, so this seems like it’s really a standard fixed-wireless satellite connection, and the WiFi is just there to make the last part a little easier to handle.
