BellSouth, SBC, And Verizon Agree On Fiber Optic Standard

from the surprising... dept

In a somewhat surprising move, the big “baby bells”, BellSouth, SBC, and Verizon have agreed on a “fiber to the premise” standard that should (in theory) make it so you can get fiber to your home sooner. Not surprisingly, they’ve settled on a PON (passive optical networking) solution, which is what they’ve talked about for ages. There are a number of folks who think that PON is the wrong solution for fiber-to-the-home, but this announcement might make any other solution unlikely to get very far.
