U.S. Arrests 135 In Nationwide Cybercrime Sweep

from the lock-'em-up dept

The US is picking up their efforts to put the hurt on those involved with identity theft and online crime. Today they announced that they’ve arrested 135 people suspected of various online crimes, including auction fraud, investment fraud and identity theft. They also seized over $17 million from those individuals – though the total amount swindled appears to be much higher (they mention one guy who apparently suckered people out of $60 million through an investment scam). While there have been some small efforts made to track down online scam artists, this big showing by the US government suggests that maybe they’re finally realizing just how big a problem this has been.
