Security Research Exemption To DMCA Considered

from the one-small-step dept

As the US Copyright Office considers certain “exceptions” to the anti-circumvention part of the DMCA, they’re apparently thinking about exempting security research work. Right now, of course, a researcher who points out a security hole could be threatened with a federal lawsuit. The exemption would allow researchers to continue their work finding holes. The music industry, of course, would find this to be terrible, because (gasp! oh no!) those security researchers might reveal such security holes. That discovering security holes lets people create stronger security doesn’t seem to occur to the shortsighted industry execs.
