3G Takes To The Skies
from the wait-a-second... dept
Following on our recent discussions about mobile phone use in airplanes, I’m surprised to hear that Siemens is running tests to use 3G-based systems to let both passengers and pilots communicate with the ground. If, as we discussed last week, mobile phone systems really are a threat to airplane safety, you would think that using 3G networks would cause some of the same problems – epsecially with the often quoted reason that such systems would mess up all those towers on the ground. Once again, I’m leaning towards the belief that mobile phones aren’t as big a problem as they’re made out to be.

The Cellular companies in the early days couldn’t track the cell phone jumping from tower to tower across the country. That is why they banned them on the planes, just a theory anyway when you follow the money trail.
What is the system is designed not to interfere?
Could that be the reason they are running tests?
