More People Going High-Tech When Hiking
from the bringing-the-great-indoors-with-you dept
It seems that outdoor enthusiasts are increasingly toting a whole bagful of gadgets every time they “get back to nature”. From GPS devices to mobile phones to PDAs to MP3 players, gadgets are increasingly a part of the great outdoors. Of course, there’s also some backlash occurring from people who think that hikers are becoming too reliant on gadgets and not doing the necessary preparation, assuming their gadgets will save them, should they get into any trouble.

Cool
When will the peak of Everest be filled with the blare of rap music? Bird Watchers of the 20th century could be replaced by Cell Phone Listeners of the 21st, the Grand Canyon could host the loudest rock concerts in history, people will go to the arctic to watch light shows of satellites passing overhead. Birds could be tagged with portable wi-fi transcievers.
Old debate
The retrogrouches vs. the techies is an old argument in nature circles. I think the argument goes back at least to the development of nylon tents that were much easier to carry than canvas tents.
I still wish I had the gumption to carry a canvas tent. My girlfriend is such a gearhead.
