Hilton Battles Hotel Discounters
from the integrated-system dept
We were just talking about how most hotels aren’t well integrated with online booking systems at the same time as many hotels where complaining about being undercut in their own buildings by online discounters. Now, Hilton has come out with an integrated strategy to make sure that hotels booked online go for the same rates as those booked elsewhere. All of the reservation systems should work together so that if a room is available in a hotel, it would be available via a phone call or over the web. It only took them a few years to work out this is how it should have been done in the first place.

Apartheid System
Any such “unified” system will still have levels of access to keep the rabble apart from the higher classes. Hotels are notorious for (unofficially) making their rooms available only to people they like. I’ve stayed at a Hilton at Virginia Beach once, where by coincidence, thousands of African-American college students had a huge get-together in the town. The hotel made all guests wear a non-detachable bracelet 24 hours a day; it could only be cut off with scissors when vacating the hotel.
