IM Remains An Enigma For IT

from the put-your-head-in-the-sand dept

Most company IT departments know that people within their companies are big instant messaging users, but they don’t know what to do about it. Only one-third of companies questioned say that they’ve standardized on a single IM platform for everyone to use, while another 28% say they’re trying to block IM traffic (which seems to be the wrong way to go about things). My guess is that the companies that do allow for IM usage have a de facto standard that almost everyone at the company uses. That’s how it’s worked in most companies where I’ve seen heavy IM usage. The companies that are trying to block it, of course, are going down the wrong route. Trying to shut out a technology that makes it easier for your employees to communicate doesn’t seem like the smartest move.
