Small Businesses Wary Of Internet Sales Tax Plan
from the oh-for-the-lover-of-bureaucracy dept
While the argument continues to go back and forth over whether or not forcing online merchants to collect sales tax will cause people to shop elsewhere, there’s one element of this that hasn’t been talked about much. The smaller “mom & pop” online merchants are scared to death of the pending sales tax requirements. The amount of paperwork it would add to a small shop selling their products online is tremendous. While many will charge sales tax for people in the same state their located in, if they had to handle sales tax for 50 different states, they don’t kno what they would do. There are some people who are looking into exempting small businesses from any across-the-board sales tax plan, but none has been put forth yet. Meanwhile, of course, the mandatory sales tax collection is far from a done deal. Some Senators are still working on blocking it completely.

Sounds like a business opportunity to me. If ‘someone’ hosted a site with pre-built commerce solutions that collected taxes, it would be a haven for small and mid-size business’s which can’t really afford the time or money to set it up their selves.
