Silence! NYC Passes Cell Phone Ban

from the and-so-it-goes dept

New York City’s City Council is really adamant about passing this law against using mobile phones during performances of any kind. It passed once before, but was quickly vetoed by Mayor Bloomberg. Now the council has outvoted Bloomberg and turned the mobile phone ban into law. I tend to agree that this is a silly, unenforceable law. If anything, it will waste the time of police. I also think it’s a little odd that it even outlaws “dialing” or “listening to” your phone in such a place. What’s so disturbing about someone checking their voicemail silently? Anyway, I can’t wait until the first person gets slapped with the $50 fine. I wonder if, like the first jay walking arrests made by Giuliani years ago, it will bring a ton of media coverage.
