Calls To Cancel Cell Phone Plans Can Fall On Deaf Ears

With all the stories going around about how wireless carriers will do almost anything to keep you as a customer, it doesn’t mention the extorion they’ll try to charge you if you do quit. Columnist Larry Magid got pretty angry when Verizon wouldn’t let his daughter cancel her service even though (despite their claims to the contrary) they didn’t offer service in the area around her university. Despite speaking to several customer service reps, they all told him it would cost him the $175 termination fee, even though they weren’t living up to their end of the bargain. In the end, he did get them to reverse that charge – but only after he called up a PR representative to comment on the story. The PR rep insisted that this wasn’t done as a special favor, but was supposed to be the official policy. However, the fact that three different customer service reps told him otherwise, suggests it’s not a widely known policy…
