Vail Selling Manhole Covers On eBay
from the municipal-funding dept
I heard about this on the radio the other day, but this is the first time I’ve seen a print story about it. It seems that the city of Vail, Colorado was having problems with people stealing manhole covers from the town. Why? Apparently, they’re pretty nice manhole covers, and people wanted them as souvenirs. So, now, they’re selling the manhole covers on eBay, and (amazingly enough) it seems there are plenty of people out there with the money to waste on them. They’ve already sold out of the first batch and brought in $14,000. You can buy a large manhole cover for $295 or a small one for $65. Now, I’m not one to argue with souvenir buying, but a manhole cover just seems a little bizarre.

In our culture where everything comes from IKEA and is light and flimsy, maybe art fags like the manhole covers for their solid, heavy, industrial feel.
