Pet Supplies Find Sales on Internet
from the don't-look-now dept
It’s become quite the cliche to use “selling pet food online” as the example of the most ridiculous of the dot com stupid ideas. However, the NY Times is reporting that pet supply sales online aren’t looking so bad these days. Don’t expect a return of the Pets.com sock puppet and other crazy marketing schemes, but some companies (taking a more modest approach) are discovering that it really is a pretty big market out there, and people are willing to buy petfood online – though, perhaps at a slower rate than the original petfood dot coms had hoped.

The problem is...
… that pet food is a common loss-leader. Pet stores, dept. stores, and grocery stores all sell pet food for about the same price. It’s when you want some other non-food pet supplies that the high margins come in. If I could find an online pet store that truly discounted non-food pet supplies I’d be all over it!
