Computers In The Classroom

from the put-them-there,-and-then-what? dept

While there are a number of individual and groups out there protesting against using technology in the classroom, many parents are pushing to make sure their kids have computers in school, and many students want it as well. In fact, now that 98% of public schools in the US have internet access, even some of the groups that had previously protested computers in schools have changed tactics to suggest ways to make computers more useful in schools. I still go back to the basic statment that the computer is just a tool. If it’s used properly, it can certainly help in the educational process – but anyone who thinks it’s going to solve all educational problems, or that just putting one in each classroom will do any good, is just lying to themselves. Update: Larry Magid’s latest column talks about how many students know computers better than their teachers, which leads to some interesting classroom situations.
