Is Our Children Learning From Computers?

from the to-the-studies dept

An interesting article from the folks at Red Herring looking at various studies questioning whether or not computers help kids learn. It seems you can produce a stack of studies supporting either opinion. It’s interesting, though not at all surprising, to find out that many technology companies have put out studies showing the wonderful benefits of technology in schools. Those companies, of course, are making good money selling into the education market. I think that it comes down to a combination of things. Clearly, technology is not a “cure-all” and anyone who thinks it is, is delusional. However, computers, if used properly, can motivate some students to learn things they would otherwise be unmotivated to learn, and can act as a learning aid for others. Once again, the technology is just a tool. What really matters is how it’s used, and who is using it.

Re: No Subject Given

I noticed this myself. “Is Are Children…” is also incorrect. My first temptation is that it should definitely be “Are our children…”

However, if we consider “Our Children” to be some form of proper noun, you might be able to get away with “Is Our Children”, but I wouldn’t do it.

Er. It’s a joke. One started by the Red Herring which used that title. The joke is that, clearly, our children aren’t learning, because they’re writing things like “is our children learning”.

Ha ha.

I thought it was funny, but apparently, it was just me and the headline writer at Red Herring, because a number of people have IM’d or emailed about this as well.
