Dealing With Gnutella Bandwidth Bandits

Salon takes a look at the struggles within the Gnutella community as they try to figure out what to do with clients that don’t “play fair” and hog too many resources, slowing down the system for everyone else. There’s a growing belief that closing the network off to only “approved” clients is the way to do it – but that rubs many people the wrong way. Since Gnutella was created as an open system, any hint of any type of “closing” it gets people upset. However, it sounds like a pretty good plan. If people don’t like it, they’re free to create their own open network – and let the users decide themselves which they like best.
