HP Backs Down On DMCA Threat
from the oops dept
Earlier this week HP threatened some researchers with the DMCA for finding some holes in their software. The news of that threat created quite an uproar, including within HP’s own engineers, and HP has now backed down. They don’t necessarily admit that they were wrong, but say they didn’t realize the DMCA was such a “hotbutton” issue, and then try to pass it off saying an “outside lawyer” added the DMCA language.

That's nice, but...
… isn’t it still kind of scary that they could? What if this was a company (say, Microsoft) that couldn’t care less about a PR nightmare?
