UMTS Forum Finds WLAN No Threat To 3G

The UMTS Forum, an international body evangelizing 3G services, has published Impact and Opportunity:Public Wireless LANs and 3G Business Reviews to examine WLANs imapact on 3G. Like us, the believe that WLANs and 3G are complimentry technologies. Their report concludes that WLANs will add $2.8 billion in 2005 to the 3G market and that WLANs are an opportunity for operator differentiation. They correctly point out that hotspots are great for poeple who hang out in hotels and airports, but only cellular based systems can provide broad coverage and access at speed.
