Mimetic Management

from the imitation-is-the-sincerest-form-of-flattery dept

Michael Schrage’s latest column basically takes the concept of “business fads” and says they’re useful to study – not necessarily to figure out what you should do as a business, but to see who your customers want to act like. Knowing who your customers are trying to imitate gives you a good look into their minds, and what you can offer them to fulfill that need. It would be amusing if this “management technique” itself became the next overhyped business fad, as you would get something of a business fad loop: people imitating people trying to figure out who’s imitating whom.
