Carrier Consolidation in 2003

John Stanton, CEO of Voicestream, told reporters that carrier consolidation is likely to happen in 2003 when the federal spectrum cap is lifted. Given that consolidation will happen based on carriers’ network technologies, what will happent to Voicestream if AT&T and Cingular decide to merge. Will it be left out in the cold with Nextel to compete with Verizon/SprintPCS and AT&T/Cingular? More importantly, can it compete in those conditions? Update (MM): Interestingly, yesterday Sprint PCS chairman William T. Esrey also had a few words about consolidation. He also points out that it’s likely to fall along technology lines, but suggests the picture might be a bit more complicated than that.
