Satellite Radio vs. WiFi

from the fight-it-out dept

Those satellite radio guys sure like to run to the government a lot to protect their spectrum from non-existant problems. A few months ago they were complaining to the government about cellular carriers who’s spectrum might possibly one day interfere with the satellite radio spectrum. Now, they’re doing the same thing with WiFi companies. They admit there isn’t any interference right now, but because there might be one day, they suddenly want the spectrum used in 802.11 products to be regulated. Part of the reason 802.11 technologies are so inexpensive and have been adopted so widely is that the spectrum isn’t regulated. The article quotes a number of 802.11-based companies who are not happy about this – but it appears that the satellite radio guys have a much stronger government connection and could very well win.
