Choose Your Own Ads

from the interesting-ideas dept

Well, it’s better than shoving pop-ups down everyone’s throats, but I’m not so sure this new idea will be a huge success. An online weather service is going to let users choose which company they want to recieve ads from and for the next day or two, that user will only see ads from that advertiser. It certainly could lead to better targeted advertising. However, it does ad an extra step (the picking) for the user, which could annoy people. It also might attract higher paying advertisers who realize they’re more likely to display their ads in front of interested parties. However, if this takes off and you have to “pick your advertiser” at every site you go to it’s going to get pretty damn annoying, pretty damn quickly.
