Was Al Qaida Building A Joke Bomb Thanks To The Internet?

from the fact-checking-anyone? dept

I guess today is “debunking silly internet urban legends” day. First we have info about the tourist guy (below) and now comes a story that reports from the BBC that they found plans on how to build a nuclear device in an Al Qaida safehouse may have been joke plans easily found on the internet. It’s unclear if the plans found really are the same as a 20 year old joke article on how anyone can build a thermnuclear weapon in 10 “easy” steps, but some of the reporter’s quotes make it sound somewhat similar. There’s also an amusing story in the article about a BBC reporter who apparently says the BBC deserves all the credit for liberating Kabul – prompting another reporter to compare that reporter (unfavorably) to a B-52 bomber.
