Language And The Internet
from the perfect-together dept
Scientific American has a review of a new book about how the internet and language work together called Language And The Internet by David Crystal. Unlike other linguists who complain that the internet is destroying English (or other languages), Crystal believes this is a more exciting time for language, thanks to the internet. The rapidly changing nature of language, due to the internet, makes it more interesting to study, and less of a boring subject. He says that chatrooms are like parties where people have to bring their own language, instead of bringing their own alcohol.

I hope the book’s content is more creative than it’s title. 🙂
Re: No Subject Given
No, it’s content is not particularly good. It is interesting and you should certainly read it, but Crystal has bene talking to some very odd people and his explanations for some usages are bizarre in the extreme. It’s also not very well written.
