New DoCoMo 3G Phones And Their 945 Page Manuals
from the wow dept
There’s been a lot of talk about how NTT DoCoMo was getting all set to launch their 3G phones in Japan today. I ignored most of the stories, but now I find out that the most common phones come with a 945 page instruction manual and I have to wonder what they’re thinking. Obviously, most people won’t even bother to look at the manual at all, but what could the phone have that requires 945 pages of instructions? If it’s that complex are people really going to use it to its fullest, or is it simply going to be a nifty toy with lots of features no one knows how to use?

What's Wrong With User Manuals
If it’s like a lot of user manuals, it repeats the same information in at least six languages, and the largest section will be all of the “regulatory notices” regarding compliance with FCC, EPA, EC, and other gov’t regulatory bodies.
I have a manual for the Reference CD-ROM which came with a Compaq laptop. It’s 75 pages long, but only 3 of those pages are in English, the largest portion of which is taken up by a table showing all the languages supported!
