The PerfectBook Machine

For years people have talked about offering “books on demand” by having a special printer at book shops. However, the technology never got to the point that it was practical. That may be changing with the “PerfectBook” machine. Of course, there are still a ton of problems. Books would need to get digitized, publishers would have to deal with intellectual property issues, book sellers would have to agree to buy these machines, and consumers would need to be educated. Seems like a lot of problems to sort through. Not that I don’t think we’ll eventually get there, but I wouldn’t be looking for that “hot off the presses” custom book in the near future. Similar attempts at “on demand” software and music haven’t exactly been the most successful ventures…
