Spinning Internet Monitoring Studies

from the how-would-you-report-it dept

Here’s a choose-your-own-press-spin activity. If someone put out a study showing that approximately 30% of workers have their internet use monitored (a number that is significantly below previous studies on the subject), but that evidence shows such monitoring is increasing over time, how would you report the story? You could take the standard approach and scream about how employee monitoring is increasing or you could take a different tact and say employee monitoring isn’t as widespread as everyone thought before. You would think – if you just saw the headlines – that these two articles were talking about entirely different studies.
