IBM Buys Informix

from the databases-r-us dept

In attempt to better challenge Oracle, IBM is buying the database part of Informix. It appears the rest of Informix (not a very big part) will be renamed Ascential Software and will build applications that run on top of what were formerly Informix (now IBM) databases. Part of the deal is that Informix (er… I mean Ascential) gets a lot of cash, and a marketing agreement with IBM for whatever software they build. IBM in turn, gets a lot of customers (some big names too), and some database technology that’s not too shabby.
