Motivational Email Deflates Company Value

from the ouch dept

Near the top of the list of “things you shouldn’t do if you’re running a company” is: send out a long email threatening all of your employees if they don’t work harder. I saw a copy of this email last week and thought it was pretty amusing. However, the fact that it got out of the company and has been sent around has caused the company (Cerent) to see its stock price cut from $44 to $30. To have one errant memo cut 1/3 of your company’s valuation can’t be a good thing. I also don’t think the end results were that motivational. All this from a company that’s on the list of “best places to work”.
