Dot Com Spinoffs Not Such A Good Idea

from the down-the-drain dept

It wasn’t so long ago that every big company was looking to spin off their internet division to capitalize on the insane valuations everyone was giving pure-play dot coms. Now that’s looking like a very bad idea. Most of those spinoffs are performing horribly. Does anyone ever wonder what happened to the “long term view”? I remember back in the late 80s and early 90s the complaint about American companies was that they were only focused on the short term (quarterly) earnings reports and never thought to the long term. People seemed to forget that complaint when everyone was becoming millionaires. Perhaps it’s time to look at that again.
