New.net Launching

from the the-excitement-never-ends dept

Idealab is finally launching their New.net service, about which there have been a number of rumors in the past few weeks. The basic system is a new domain naming system that will allow people to register all sorts of new top level domains (well beyond the ones that ICANN took years to approve). The idea is to do that by creating a small plugin for your browser that will check on those domains. It’s a pretty creative solution actually, but I wonder if it will actually catch on. How do you explain to the people who don’t have the plugin why they can’t get to a site? Who’s going to buy a site that most of the people on the internet can’t get to? I think there’s a chicken and egg problem going on. Plus, the system isn’t designed to deal with trademark violations, so some companies are not happy about it.
