When will we be able to make cheap, useful diamonds? Maybe never. But here’s a story that has all the makings of being blown out of proportion. A German lab has made some nice diamond films that could be useful in the semiconductor industry… if the process were about a million times cheaper and easier, that is.

technology has been elusive for 15 years — when I was an undergrad at northwestern, we had grad students who pioneered the concept of laying thin films of diamond using microwaves and methane. hasn’t yet been commercialized, despite 15 years of promises.
