Internet Related Jobs Are Changing

from the well,-duh dept

A number of articles are pointing out that things are changing for workers in the internet world. First, we discover that the kid CEO may no longer be desirable. In fact, companies would prefer if you had a good mix of old and new economy experience. They even mention Joseph Galli who helped destroy the market value of two internet companies as being a person with “good job prospects”. That seems a bit odd to me. While I do think that a broad background helps, the person also does need to understand the internet to really make things happen. Of course, at the same time, we discover that internet layoffs are happening at traditional companies too. Internet related layoffs aren’t just for dot coms any more. Many traditional firms were bullied into believing they needed huge online staffs, when that wasn’t necessarily the case. Of course, those traditional firms were run by these so-called “experienced” old economy folks, and they still messed up, so I’m not sure where that leaves us. Perhaps no one is a good manager in the new economy. We should all just work for ourselves.
