Record Stores Going Out of Business?

from the but-no-support dept

Salon is running an article with the ominous title “The death of music retail as we know it” and goes on to say that record shops face “extinction” in the next twelve months. That’s quite a prediction. The article however, is a lot of fluff about recordable CD sales on the rise, and the usual talk about Napster. There’s no other explanation why these are all suddenly going to kill the record store. In fact, most of the folks interviewed for the story claim they’re doing fine, even if they are selling a lot of CD-Rs. I do think that these things have the potential to cause huge changes in the record industry, but I don’t like to see random predictions that aren’t backed up by anything.
