Missing Names

from the register-first dept

It seems pretty straight forward to me. When trying to name your company, get the domain name first! If someone else has it, then you’ve got a problem. If no one has it, the chances of it being trademarked are slim. Obviously, this hadn’t occurred to folks at a Cabletron unit looking for a new name. They chose a name, Netuitive, and then took their sweet time before registering both the domain and the trademark. The result? Someone else beat them to both. I’m still amazed at the HP spinoff naming themselves Agilent, when someone else has the domain. And you wonder why people think big companies don’t get it.
