AltaVista Dumps Paid Placement on Searches

AltaVista, who made folks very angry when they announced their plan to auction off search results on certain terms, has ditched the plan altogether, since it wasn’t selling. Moral of the story: before you do something that’s likely to piss off the world, figure out if there’s actually a market for what you’re doing. The whole thing was silly because AltaVista presented the program in a way that misrepresented it so it looked even worse that it really was. Anyway, I like GoTo.com’s reaction to the whole deal at the bottom of the article. I do believe that AltaVista probably didn’t implement well, but I don’t think that says very much for GoTo.com either.
