All kinds of 3D Modeling programs (Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, etc) do this as well. Part of the reason may be forced obsolescence, but there are some valid reasons for it.
If they want to call it a class action lawsuit, I hope the result are about the same. Something along the lines of a $10 "reverse" gift certificate that you promise to buy services from that company and may or may not ever use.

I don't know if it is necessarily extreme. I bet you would label any number of German's as murderers for just doing what their government told them to in the early 40's.
They were going to fight any rules that were put in place just to shift what the perceived "center ground" is.
It seems like a situation where I say you should get paid $10 and you think you should get $100. The compromise would be somewhere around $55. I can only go as low as $0 because I can't make you pay me for you doing the work, but you can go as high as you want. If you say you should get $1000, the middle is around $500 and if you settle for $200 it looks like a compromise but is still way above the $55 you should have gotten.
Seeing how ISP's are just as corrupt and always looking for an excuse to raise prices, they could just be using HADOPI as one of those reasons whether it is really a significant cost to them or not.
Placebo effect. Same reason a plain sugar pill "cures" headaches, arthritis, or just about anything else in some people who think they are getting an actual drug.
A "Representative sample" doesn't necessarily mean a large percentage. You may want to take a class or at least read up on statistics before making comments like that.
The FSF isn't demanding the removal of VLC from the app store. They are simply stating that Apple is distributing it with DRM which goes against the license that it is released under. Rather than comply with the license, Apple chose to just remove the app instead.

They didn't release this instead of using the app store. It is an alternate app. They already have a Kindle app in the app store.
