I suggest you follow Kait Nolan an author who blogs about the indie process. http://kaitnolan.com/2010/12/29/reflections-on-this-self-publishing-thing/ The most popular indies on Amazon and the like do indeed have editors and crit partners. And just because an author goes through a publishing house does not mean its better quality; consider the garbage that is the Twilight series.
