HBO and Showtime are middlemen with old technology (cable). Netflix and Amazon are middlemen with new technology (streaming). As long as companies like HBO and Showtime continue to hold on to the cable only world, they will fail. Netflix is to HBO what HBO was to NBC. The future is Internet only. No cable. Plus Netflix has completely disrupted the price structure set by HBO and Showtime. They want over $20 a month for service thats only available on cable. Netflix wants $9 a month for streaming service. Netflix gives you access to way more movies. HBO and Showtime gives you access to more original shows. But now that Netflix is entering that game, HBO and Showtime are scared. HBO and Showtime need to decide whether they want to be a "channel" or a producer.

    When ESPN becomes available ...

As soon as I can get ESPN on the Internet, that is college football games, I'm done with cable.

All Macs are for media consumption?

I guess you don't attend many developer conferences. Go to PyCon. About 65-70% MacBooks. Attend RailsConf. About the same. Attend most web developer conferences. MacBooks are the standard, not the exception.

You're thinking about it the wrong way

If the user experience is far better on a locked down, proprietary device, people will choose that one. If someone can build a tablet running Linux or Chrome OS that comes close to what the iPad can offer, then the "open" product may win. But it isn't about whether its open or not, its about how good of a user experience it is.

    Chris hates his kids

You got your kid a Zune over an iPod? You are truly evil. I can understand the Droid except the fact that you are a hypocrite. Won't buy Apple because of their "controls" over their devices, yet you get a Droid which runs on Verizon, probably the most controlling corporation in existence.

    Re: Strange

Android before 2.0 was slow. But the hardware it ran on was even slower. Even now, the only hardware that runs it well is the new Motorola Droid. Even the HTC's are still using outdated CPU's.

    Re:

If its slow, its not the OS, its the hardware. Outdated processors in the Pre's. You can't compete with Apple using outdated hardware. Subsidized phones means you need to have the latest and greatest hardware.

I don't have a problem paying to watch shows

But I do have a problem paying Hulu. I'd love to pay to watch shows from HBO like Entourage and Big Love. I wish HBO would make them available online.

Hulu is trying to be the Cox, Verizon, Comcast, or Time-Warner of the web. Hulu will probably want you to sign up with them just like you do with cable tv now. No alacarte. Probably a tiered system.

My problem with Hulu is the fact that it is owned by a media giant. I would rather have a good open source client that hooked into networks like HBO. We don't need the middleman. Lets get the show straight from the source.
