  • 8 Million People Looked Up Their Elected Officials' Contact Info During Wikipedia Blackout

    Butcherer79 ( profile ), 19 Jan, 2012 @ 12:50am

    A good start?

From census records @ http://exploredia.com/population-of-us-states-2011/ the population of total US territory is just over 312M.
Although this blackout may have raised awareness, the total percentage of the 312M that contacted is about 2.5%.

Maybe a longer protest is needed to raise awareness further, also out of the users of the tool, how many were duplicate users, how many were under voting age, how many were already aware of the bill?

I'm not trying to say that the blackout was unsuccessful, just that perhaps there's more successful ways of raising awareness, or perhaps the protest wasn't big enough?

  • Jon Stewart Promises To Study Up On SOPA

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re:

You do realize that talk of overthrowing the government is still illegal and considered treason, right?

Does this mean that election campaigns are illegal too? I'm pretty sure all opposition parties talk of overthrowing the current government, don't they?
This could mean that voting for the losing party (or just the party that's not in power) is also illegal.

    Shock-Jock-esque?

Is this Jon Stewart fella really risque, or is he the same as most 'Shock-Jock' DJ's?
Most of the latter are paid to appear to be against 'the machine/industry/rich'; the problem being, they're still paid by 'the machine/industry/rich' and you can bet your bottom dollar that there's only certain levels they can go to.
I'm not sure what annoys me more, the fact that the bosses of these Shock-Jock types think Mr & Mrs Public are stupid enough to believe they're against their own industry; or the fact that a lot of the listeners actually are...

    Re: Re: Re:

I think ninja said he 'stole' it in what should have been an ironically funny way, the AC picked up on this word and launched the misinformed attack from there. I'm not defending AC's viewpoint, just saying he/she responded the the self accusation thinking he/she had some sort of foothold.

I think we need an irony tag to be introduced when the sarc one is implemented - it would save the AC's confusion, though I suppose would be less entertaining for the rest of us.

    Re: Re: Re: Re:

so they are redundant, cannot be enforced and so may as well not exist.
The battle cry above is insinuating that SOPA has the power to go back in time and somehow stop ninja from pirating in the first place.
For a pro-SOPA type response the AC should have said something along the lines of:

This is why we want SOPA to become law

    Or something like that.

SOPA's existence in it's current form has no impact whatsoever on what ninja has done, is doing and will do in the future.

For the record I think it's a shit bill, but being from the UK I cannot influence either way and have more than enough to worry about with our government trying to control what we can and can't see online (or make the internet "safe" , if you're that gullible)

So the noise ordinance that prevents me from blasting my pro-same-sex-marriage diatribe is bad?

This appears to be a somewhat homophobic or heterophobic stance (dependant on whether you're against pro-same-sex-marriage or whther the diatribe is against all that is against pro-same-sex-marriages), just as well we're not censored or you'd never be able to make such a statement.
Whether you're shouting it from a soapbox or pumping it through an amp, I would think your neighbor would be pretty pissed off either way, still, it's better than being pissed on - allegedly.

  • Does Ticketmaster Undercount Tickets Sold To Underpay?

Re: Erm what about ticket stubs?

Good, but not flawless, what if someone buys a ticket and can't make it through ill health/the car broke down/the train got cancelled.
Stubs at the door are not proof of ticket sales, just attendance.

You've also got to take into account the ticket touts who buy up as many as they can and sell them outside the venue, they sure as hell don't want to see the gig, just make a quick buck, any tickets that they have left are discarded and they still make their money.

Re: "time to bring the EPO to heel,"

"First, is there a "European people" that I've somehow missed? -- In a period when the euro (currency) is said to be on the verge of collapse? Just when the whole notion is about to fall apart, you've adopted the false premise that Europe is somehow united..."

Yes there is, I don't know how you missed them, but Europe and the European Union were formed long before the currency.
You appear to have adopted the false pretence that Europe is inextricably linked to the Euro currency, it is not; the Euro has only been around since 1999. England, Scotland and Wales are part of Europe, they do not use the Euro.
Have a read of this before you reply, it may help before the inevitable insult come flying in (and before DH has had a chance to post too, who'd have thought?!)
