    Should this clarification be added: the US Patent system. Other countries have their own laundry, which we hear very little about.

    Our ideas about property and the role of the state date back to guys like John Locke, who was writing before there was a USA. Patents and copyrights did not exist then.

    But, if Locke had thought about those kinds of "property", I +ACo-think+ACo- he would have said something like this
