Sprint Makes Its WiMax Plans Clearer

Sprint has already made it clear that they're planning to use WiMax in some form or another, so today's announcement that they'll be using Motorola equipment is just giving out a few of the details. However, with Nextel's announcement yesterday about testing UMTS-TDD in 2.5 GHz spectrum, it is worth pointing out that Sprint's WiMax efforts are also in 2.5 GHz spectrum -- so it is reasonable to watch how the two trials move forward. Many have pointed out that part of the reason why the Sprint-Nextel deal makes sense is all that 2.5 GHz spectrum the combined company will have, allowing them to offer licensed-spectrum based mobile broadband that will be tough for others to match -- since no one else has really equivalent spectrum available.
