I see where you went wrong, Mike

Quote: Because we can now share information pretty easily, Airbnb's detailed review system and communication process take away most of the "risk" that necessitated a health and safety law.

See, right there is the problem. You somehow think that you get to decide the level of risk you're willing to accept. You forgot that Nanny Bloomberg and his minions are the only ones capable of determining acceptable risk, whether it be for BNBs or 32 oz. sodas.

    Re:

The reason "Smash" is failing has nothing to do with TV execs and everything to do with the fact that there aren't enough middle-aged women and gay men to keep the show afloat.

Funny no one has mentioned "The Following" on FOX. Now that's a good network program with a sufficient amount of murder and gore; add some real curse words and a little nudity and it would rival the cable stuff.

Bob: Is something on your mind?
TD: Just want to let you know you're boggin' up my blog.
    Bob: Is that a fact?
    TD: Yeah, it's a fact.
Bob: Well, for a man who don't go heeled you run your mouth kind of reckless, don't you?
TD: No need to go heeled to get the bulge on a turd like you.
    Bob: Is that a fact?
    Wyatt Earp: Mm-hmm. That's a fact.
    [Bob types in all caps.]
    Bob: Well, I'm real scared.
TD: Damn right, you're scared. I can see that in your posts.
[TD tears apart any argument Bob tries even as Bob tries to reach for his keyboard.]
    Bob: All right now.
TD: Go ahead. Go ahead, skin it. Skin that smoke wagon and see what happens.
Bob: Listen, mister, I-I'm gettin' awful tired of your--
[TD slaps Bob hard in the bruised ego.]
TD: I'm gettin' awful tired of your gas. Now jerk that mouse and go to work.
[Bob doesn't do anything so TD slaps him in the lack of sound arguments again.]
TD: I said throw down, boy.
[TD slaps Bob harder and when Bob turns to look at TD his posts are the endless subject of ridicule and scorn.]
TD: You gonna do somethin' or just stand there and bleed useless nonsense?
    [Bob still doesn't do anything.]
TD: No? I didn't think so.

Obligatory Tombstone reference to the utter sissy, Bob.

Yeah, but then you have people like my wife, bless her soul, who are more than happy to pay $18+ for that shiny, plastic package with a disc inside because it has liner notes and might have lyrics and stuff included. She actually got mad at me because the last "album" I bought her was a Wal-Mart download that I burned to CD afterwards.

She absolutely doesn't want downloads at any price, and will never get on board with the digital revolution, and is the perfect customer in the mind of the typical RIAA executive.

  • Warner Bros. Wants You To 'Buy' Movies Instead Of Rent… And By 'Buy' It Means Spend More To Still 'Rent'

This is why I hope the physical disc doesn't go away

The only way I can see anyone using UV digital copy would be if the physical disc were never available and it was the only method of getting the movie for home/personal use. The digital copy is usually going to be sub-DVD quality, and looks blurry even on a notebook, much less on my big-screen TV. Tell me why I would want to watch a blurry video that's going to give me a headache?? I have no use for the digital copy. I guess they keep the video quality way down to save on drive space and/or bandwidth, but today with 1 and 2 TB drives common, and fat broadband available almost everywhere, I don't see the reasoning there.

When I get a new Bluray disc (purchased legitimately or received as gift), I'm most likely going to rip it to my hard drive. That way, I get a true 1080P digital copy instead of that crappy VHS-quality digital copy that comes "free" in the bundle. My BR disc goes into storage for safekeeping. I've already paid for the disc and I'm using it as I see fit. I'm not putting it up on a torrent, or handing out copies to my friends. I'm just using it how I want since I paid for it.

  • Stealing Isn't Saving, But Sharing Isn't Stealing

Re: Re: Re: business models for the riaa mpaa

I stopped watching AMC and IFC because they now have commercial breaks every few minutes. Both of them were commercial-free in the past, and I was a frequent viewer. They didn't just introduce a few commercial breaks, they went totally overboard (like the big 3 networks have been for decades), with only 37 minutes of your show for every 60 minutes of air time.

Even though I could DVR and time-shift the commercials out for the most part, I don't want the hassle, so I never record anything on those channels.

These are channels that I get "free" with my Dish package, and they're both in HD, but I won't watch them, just because they have so many commercials and they have to cut so much to get a movie into its time slot.

My point is that I would rather wait weeks or months to get the content via Netflix (BD or streaming) than to watch it with commercial interruptions.

Re: I would love to cut satelite and land lines

The HD channels they dropped, such as ABC Family, were pretty much not going to get watched anyway, at least in my household. Now, I was a little upset when they dropped ESPNNEWS HD, but I won't be really mad unless they mess with one of the good channels, e.g. ESPN and ESPN2, TBS and TNT, TCM, etc.

    Shiny plastic discs

Unfortunately, my wife is one of those consumers whom the record labels love. She doesn't want digital downloads at all -- she wants shiny plastic discs. She wants that piece of paper that has a picture of the album cover, she wants the liner notes (if any), she really wants the lyrics, etc. She wants to be able to slide that plastic into the CD player in the car, the kitchen or the bedroom stereo. She still wants me to rip it so that I can add the songs to her Blackberry, too, but she wants that label-supplied plastic disc with all of its trappings and has actually asked me NOT to download albums for her from iTunes or Walmart.com anymore.

    *Sigh*

  • Another View Of The Netflix Price Hike: It's Speeding Up The Shift To Online Streaming

    Big Mook ( profile ), 01 Aug, 2011 @ 01:05pm

Netflix streaming isn't ready even if catalog was bigger

Forget about the less-than-stellar video quality you sometimes get with streaming Netflix. I have yet to stream any movie that actually presents true 5.1 digital audio in the stream. The best I can hope for is stereo encoding, and then having my home theater receiver give it to me in ProLogic II (simulated 5.1). It is always a better experience to have the DVD, or better yet, the BluRay, just to get the best possible audio and video.

The quality issues, in addition to the too-small catalog, is forcing me to go back to the DVD-only option. If Netflix decides to eliminate their DVD-by-mail operation, then so be it, then I'll look for other options. Streaming just doesn't cut it if you actually want a decent viewing and listening experience for your money.

Agreed, but Walker isn't TEA party. He's a long-established republican who has been in some form of public office since the early 90's.

The TEA party is a recent response to the horrible economic policies of the worst president in my lifetime (I was born in 1964). He promised hope and change but turned out to be just another tax and spend democrat.

Unions shouldn't have that power to begin with. It's how the status quo gets forwarded and nothing improves other than the salaries of the union members.

Nobody has stopped those employees from trying to negotiate better pay and benefits, they just can no longer do it collectively, meaning that everyone has to be judged on individual merit, not the collective lobbying power of a corrupt union.

Re: Re: Re: Oh, the irony...

    A. This is disingenuous. No one would call having sex with your wife, no matter what parts are inserted into which orifice, teabagging. Teabagging is reserved for men who get off on placing their genitalia on a weaker individual's face, in order to bring about humiliation and shame. That's why the left love to use it, because it's nasty and perverted and no one wants to be associated with it. I've never known a straight man would would enjoy such contact, so I'd say that's pretty good evidence of homosexuality, or maybe bisexuality. While some people might want to bring humiliation and shame to their spouse, most normal thinking people would not.

    B. Again, disingenuous. The TEA Party is about smaller government, personal responsibility and accountability and lower taxes. These would normally be considered to be good conservative values and inline with conservative/libertarian principles. Only in a far-left, loony worldview do these become the most vile and evil ideas floating around.

Wasn't trying to attack your character, just your flippant use of teabagger. You come off sounding like Janine Garafolo, or Joy Behar, both of which have about 1 functioning brain cell between them.

    Re: Oh, the irony...

A teabagger is a closeted homosexual who gets off by placing his scrotum on the face of a weaker individual, most likely while other closeted homosexuals hold the victim down.

I have never met a teabagger, but if I did, I'm pretty sure he would not be a right-wing conservative (TEA Party), as 99% of homosexuals are far-left liberals.

So every time you call a conservative a teabagger, just remember that you are really calling them a uber-left liberal, just like yourself.
