I am 63 years old and as long as I can remember the record companies have been fighting change.
First they fought the cassette tape, then the cd, then the movie companies got in the fray with the dvd, now it's the internet. The only time I can remember that they had a lock on the content was with the Singles/Albums and 8 track tapes.
If I had 1/1000th of the money they have wasted fighting this, I would never have to work again. What if they had invested this capital into the economy or developing new musical technologies? What a concept. Corporations actually improving our lives.
It's free with a basic weapon, set of Skills and little if any resources. To outfit yourself to play the game properly is a huge investment. Also this gets rid of the lawsuits about the customer losing their items they paid for in the game if they lose their account for any reason. Great! Now you never lose your account. Proper product placement for advertising revenue and the sale of in-game objects has the potential to be huge. They finally got hip to the business model that works on the internet. See, even large companies can figure it out.
Don't shop there! Ignore them. If you don't like a companies actions, boycott them. That shouldn't be hard with the Gap! My 2 kids call it Gap Crap here in California and would rather wear Target than to be caught in uncool Gap clothes. So who shops there anyway?
I agree with the general consensus on this blog about No Harm, No Foul. Of course if you can prove harm in any way you have a case.
In the case of copyrights: The copyright is supposed to protect your right to earn income from your copyrighted work. Of course this is not the only right you receive but that is enough to make the court take notice in a Capitalist society. Any loss of income for any reason is grounds for suit.
You mean to make a comment about what an idiot the umpire Joyce was to steal a perfect game from Galarraga. Or to comment on the hatchet faced demon from hell and idiot I saw on TV named Bud Selig that refused to reverse the call. There apparently is no rule to allow him to do that. Well what do you need him for if he has no power to manipulate the rules? What a joke!!
My 7 year said it just about right. The MLB are cheaters and thieves for stealing from Gallaraga and he doesn't want anything to do with them ever again! Out of the mouths of babes.
When I was a young boy my Mama took me to the side one day and taught me the most important lesson of my life.
She said son there are 3 types of people you have to stay away from.
You can never ever trust them, because they lie for a living.
They are 'Lawyers, Politicians and Police'.
Software in the past has always been copyrighted, not patented. It's killing innovation in software development because too many basic functions have now become patented. Case in point is the patent held on pull-down menus. (European Patent: 1560182 and US Patent: 6621532 also covers toolbars) Huh!! That's one of the original functions of software development. All software and millions of web pages use some form of pull-down navigation system. So now I have to pay some nameless organization in Europe and IBM in the US just because I follow basic software/web page design. That just killed thousands and maybe even millions of independent software consulting jobs and makes you work for a large concern that can afford the licensing. There goes another garage game. The idiot politicians refuse to remember that it is the little guy that comes up with the invention in his garage. Remember Apple in the 80's??
When did that start in Canada? What a bunch of Girly-Men to try to make the US happy. Learn a lesson from the US voter and watch the next election then run for the hills because I'm sure the Canadian voter is not any happier with their leaders!! Sounds like a great way to lose your next election!
I'm old, disabled and broke, so screw them. I will take them all the way through court and spend their money madly. It won't cost me a dime because I will get some bleeding-heart group to cover the court costs because I am old, disabled and broke. Then If/When I lose the case I will tell them to go screw themselves again and not pay because I am old, disabled and broke and if they hassle me more I will declare Bankruptcy and tell them to go screw themselves again. What else can they do to me? I already live in a bankrupt country with very few prospects for the future because of it's 13 trillion dollar debt. As far as I'm concerned it's just another bill I can't pay.
I, like millions of others have my News filtered through my iGoogle home page. I want Google/Yahoo to inform us in the header line of the news item that it is a pay item because many of the BIG boys in news (Wall Street Journal, New York Times, etc) only give you a paragraph of news and then send you to a page to subscribe to get the rest of the article.
You know this just pisses me off and I then have to put that company on my don't buy list. Especially when there are plenty of news sources just begging to let you read their news, plus television is full of news channels. So once bitten then I avoid the company.
So the Pastor can get up on his pulpit and preach hate speech about the evils of being gay or being a drug user and that's perfectly legal because of the rights of free speech in America.
Actually I thought the word was impersonate.
This was a great article and of particular interest was to read that music industry insiders suggest a blanket copyright fee of $2.00 or $3.00 imposed on each person's monthly internet bill. I as an artist have been saying this on this forum for 4 years and it is refreshing to finally see more sane minds being listened to.
As a disabled person on a very small income I don't understand how they lose money on me downloading something. I am so poor I don't go to movies, I don't rent DVD's, I don't have Cable and I can't afford to buy CD's. If I didn't download it I wouldn't have a clue as to what was going on. I can't buy it anyway so where's the loss? I am old and disabled but many young people I know have the same problem as me. Everyone wants to be entertained and it used to be affordable.
No one ever asks our band 3-Gen or venues to pay ASCAP because we are members. Duh all you have to do as a band / songwriter is pay the $35.00 and join ASCAP it's good for ya. Then the owner of the venue can point it to the band. The band is a member. Let's see that one fly. Stop the band that is a member of ASCAP from playing live. Sounds like a lawsuit if you are a member of ASCAP you can sue them for restricting your trade.
Songwriters need to protect their future and you are an amateur if you don't belong to ASCAP or BMI.
The slavery imposed on our lives from Birth to Death is implorable and anyone that has an illusion of being free in this world needs to be committed as a crazy person. We don't even have the freedom to kill ourselves. What a joke! Did anyone ever vote on this? Who came up with this stuff to restrict our freedom? This has to be one of those self righteous situations where the few impose their will upon the many by not giving the masses a chance to even decide their own fate.
