<content:encoded><![CDATA[Her title is Copyright Register yet copyright happens automatically - no need to register. Maybe we should 1) register all copyrights and 2) have multiple shorter copyright periods.<br />

Part 1) accomplishes a few things. By requiring filing for copyright instead of granting it automatically, it protects the things that people actually want protected. It also would create a database with all copyrighted material in one place so you could find the owner and easily license the work. <br />
<br />
Part 2) would allow things to move into the public domain sooner if the owner was seeing no more economic benefit from the work. However, someone like Disney could register their copyrights a couple of times so the monopoly on it would be longer (but not near the 100+ years it is now).<br />
