this has been going on for decades. everyone knows it has been going on and Fox would have been better off paying up and keeping quiet. thankfully, in my opinion, it has done the opposite! this practice is now going to receive some serious attention! i wonder now, having managed to ignore all the real truths there are about the entertainment industries and Hollywood that the various Congress people and the government are going to be able to continue to ignore the truth and do whatever the industries say? the only thing that these people dont have in front of them is a giant placard stating the truth and that they need to do something about it! for Dodd to say that the funding of previous years may stop shows the state of things. if a government or political party, even a politician, has to rely totally on 'donations' to remain in politics let alone in charge, we are in real deep shit!!

I live in the EU, so apparently I do own the copy of software that I buy ;) And you guys should as well. As was pointed out earlier in the thread, publishers refuse to be consistent whether it's a sale or a licence that a customer is paying for. That needs to be clarified and made consistent.

And yes, it's as perfectly fair for you as a buyer of new games to pay whatever the company is making you to, as it claims, make up for second-hand sales. Firstly, no-one is forcing you to buy the game new/full price. Ok, I know some people have to - but there are people who want to do this. But you yourself have a choice. If the companies are pricing their content too high for people to want to pay $60, then they need to change their business model and cost management - the whole point of this article.

Secondly, every other industry selling stuff seems to manage fine. If new car buyers or new furniture buyers or new television buyers have to theoretically 'pay to make up for people buying second-hand' then there is no special reason why games or books or movies or music should be exempt. They already have the special exemption that they can charge forever less a day for all copies of a one-off work, which the guy building the car, making the furniture or designing the TV doesn't get.

So yes, it's utterly fair. You want to pay $60? Fine. Not happy with it? Don't buy it. If I want to buy it, I have the perfectly legal choice of paying

apart from all the obvious things said in the article, something that really frightens me is that there are people in extremely powerful positions, that can make a huge difference to the outcome of all manner of things that actually have the opinion that it is fine, it is ok, to have these secretive policies, subject to secretive committees and secretive courts! well, i say 'it isn't ok'! they should not have this attitude! we live in what is supposed to be 'a democracy', we are supposed to be and be entitled to be free and have privacy. what has happened here has destroyed that. it has removed all remnants of trust that the government is doing it's job in protecting the nation and the people. in actual fact, it is making us fear the government! that is how it was years ago in Germany when the world went to war to stop that government and that attitude. regardless of what has happened to change the minds of the leaders, there is no excuse for this sort of treatment. surely it's better to live a perhaps shorter, happier life, but free, than a possible longer life under fear of constant surveillance and perhaps worse, isn't it?

As I recall, Woz's first products were "blue" boxes built to rip off telephone calls. Giving talented youth a reason and opportunity to build up their society in spite of their youthful trajectories has it's manifest benefit: I expect that Apple Inc would not exist had Woz lived in the modern America. Either a jail term and branding as a cyber-terrorist, or software patents that only protect the status quo would likely have pushed the nascent tech giant to quit or become a vassal of HP/IBM/etc. The outcome of that conjecture is a much poorer world where our smaller economic pie is horded by the few, a path I think we are well along now.
