During takeoff and landing, devices giving off BlueTooth signals interfere with the frequencies involved in talking to the tower...outside noise isn't a problem because the signals from the tower penetrate the nose cone to the antenna dish inside it. Because the signal is recieved below the pilots' feet...the nose cone dish then sends the signal to a pair of reflector dishes at *back* of the aircraft. After the signal passes through the second one, the signal is pushed forward wirelessly to the receiving equipment that is comnected to the pilot's, copilot's, and flight engeneer's heads.

BluTooth devices and cellular data devices cause this interference because both share the same broadband spectrum that the Aircraft uses to communicate with the tower.

Certain channels on YT make quite a bit of money doing let's plays of games, with commentary. The way these channels sustain themselves is by placing ads at the beginning of the videos - the more people watch, the more money they make.

By claiming copyright on those videos, N is essentially taking away the chance for those channels to make money, thereby making it pointless to upload games created by this company, cos it's now a waste of time with no benefit.
So all N did here was severely limit its own grassroots ed potential, and it did it at the most inopportune time, too.

One is not mutually exclusive of the other.

Of course not. This is a question of the best approach to achieving the ends (promoting the progress) which means separating it from the means to look for other means that could do a better job.

Nobody would argue that rights protection is more effective at promoting the progress than, say, shooting every artist in the head. Less hyperbolically, most people here wouldn't argue that rights protection is more effective at promoting the progress than, say, a government Ministry Of Art that regulates all creativity and artistic funding. Those would both be inferior to the copyright system. But none of that means that rights protection is synonymous with promoting the progress, nor does it mean that it's the best approach, and any honest approach to the question requires giving up the assumption that it is.

Good reasons....

1) There's a far lower chance I'm going to kill someone if I keep my headphones in and don't have to hear others' stupidity.

2) There's a far lower chance I'm going to kill a parent for being a horrible parent with my headphones in.

3) I listened to enough George Carlin in my life to be able to recite the BS they say at the beginning. I don't want to hear it again without jokes.

I flip my phone into airplane mode...most of the time. If I'm streaming a podcast or something like that, then eff it, I'm gonna keep it up till we get too high up there to keep going.

And when the stewardess comes around and asks me if my phone, which is in my pocket is off, I take my earbuds out, tell her, "yes," and explain that my earbuds are noise-cancelling (which, with something playing, they block out a LOT of noise), which is why I'm leaving them in. Not a single one yet has been smart enough to tell the difference between passive and active noise cancellation, and haven't bothered me after that.

"I call dibs on being the new Socrates."

Close to the mark, I reckon. I have long held the view that what's needed to cope with the technological change is a social change.

We hold certain values to be self-evident, like the work ethic.
It was not always thus. Ancient Greece had a society where slaves did all the menial work. Substitute robots, or more generally all-pervasive automation, for slaves, and you have the potential to create a similar society but without the misery.

It "only" needs us to change our current value system, which is by no means eternal or immutable. We need to learn to value "non-productive" pursuits, and to educate people into following such pursuits as art, theater, invention and design, maths, teaching the young and the old, etc etc.

Maybe the open source (software, 3D printing) movements are signs of things to come, with millions of people producing very useful things for no financial reward.
